Teacher Tube – Rat Lungworm Videos

Taking the Jarvi Lab into your classroom. This is a series of short videos showing the procedure at for detecting the rat lungworm in snails and slugs and diagnose for rat lungworm disease. Discussed are DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real time (q)PCR, and how to test different anti-parasitic drugs using an assay.

The following video recordings were produced by the University of Hawaii at Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy Rat Lungworm Working Group (Principal Investigator Dr. Susan Jarvi, Kathleen Howe, and Steven Jacquier, with UHH DKI College of Pharmacy LaTasha Riddick, Akio Yanagisawa and Jill Villarosa).

They are intended for use as teacher/student resources to accompany the ‘Mystery of Rat Lungworm Disease’ activity book for 2nd grade level students.

Videos were recorded, with permission, at the Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School, Hilo HI. Special thanks to Dr. Pascale Creek Pinner, Esther Kanehailua and the many Hawaii Island second grade teachers for their valuable input.
