Dr. Allen Hixon Receives Friends of Pharmacy Award

This year’s winner of the Hawaiʻi Pharmacists Association Friends of Pharmacy Award has been a champion of pharmacy partnerships for more than 15 years. Allen (Chip) Hixon, MD, is chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. In that role, he has been instrumental in incorporating clinical pharmacists in the academic practices of the Family Medicine Department since 2009.

That partnership began in Hilo, then expanded to the Physician Center Mililani on Oahu and most recently to the University Health Partners Family Medicine Clinic, where he works closely with DKICP assistant specialist Camlyn Masuda, and at Hawaiʻi Pacific Health Pali Momi Medical Center, where he works with DKICP assistant professor Chad Kawakami.

“Both Chad and I provide assistance to the Family Medicine physicians and residents by answering drug information questions, making recommendations on appropriate medication therapies and providing lectures and presentations to their department,” explains Masuda. “Dr Hixon has been instrumental in ensuring pharmacists are part of the healthcare team for family medicine and he values interdisciplinary team learning.

“He is very supportive of the college in providing opportunities for collaboration on research projects, grants and learning opportunities for the pharmacy students within the family medicine department,” she adds.
