College of Pharmacy students sponsor blood drive on UH Hilo campus

Students from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Pharmacy’s Class of 2012 will sponsor a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18 in UCB 127 on the UH Hilo campus. Parking passes are free to members of the community on a first come, first served basis.

“Statistics from the Hawaiʻi Blood Bank tell us nearly 60 percent of us will need blood sometime in our life, but only two percent of us donate,” said Eric Lum, third-year student in the College of Pharmacy. “We are joining them to try to change those numbers. All it takes is an hour of your time.”

The students hope to collect 222 pints of blood. Donors need to be at least 18 years old and be in generally good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, have blood pressure in the acceptable range of 160/90 to 110/60, and skin should be free of piercing, tattooing or other punctures for one year.

The blood drive is conducted by and supports the Blood Bank of Hawai’i.
