New publications from DKICP

Congratulations to several DKICP faculty and students who have had research results recently published.

PAPERS

Members of the Jarvi Lab published “Detection of rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis) infection by realtime PCR from the peripheral blood of animals: a preliminary study.” Co-authors include Susan Jarvi, John Jacob, Alfred Mina, and Malia Lyons. It was published open access in Parasitology Research, which is a Springer Nature Journal. Link to the paper online or a PDF.

This paper is important because it provides solid evidence for blood-based diagnostics for detection of Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) DNA rather than having to perform a lumbar puncture to obtain CSF for testing (the current definitive diagnostic). The Jarvi Lab has been working on the development of a blood-based PCR assay for several years. This work represents a collaboration between the Jarvi Lab and Makai Veterinary Clinic in Hilo, HI.
