Webinar series takes healthcare outreach online

Part of the DKICP mission is to engage with and give back to the community. “In the past, we’ve done that through health screenings and information shared at our annual Fall Health Fair,” says Roy Goo, Pharm.D., associate professor and Pharmacy Practice Department chair. “The pandemic has prevented that type of in-person event the last two years, so our students have pivoted to providing some of those same services through online webinars.”

Student pharmacists have been researching and developing short 10- to 15-minute presentations on a variety of health topics, including hypertension, asthma and COPD. With guidance from Goo, they record and post their webinars on the college’s YouTube channel for viewing by the public, with a new webinar scheduled to be available each month.

“The webinar format allows us to preserve the resource-sharing aspect of the Health Fair with viewers,” says Jasmin Curiel, a third-year student who worked with classmate Cierralyn Cabral to develop their webinar on hypertension. “We chose that topic because it’s a prevalent condition in the general population, and we wanted to provide information that helps people understand what causes high blood pressure and what they can do to prevent or control it.”
