Co-Director, Pacific Pre-Pharmacy Program

Susan JarviThe Dean of the college of Pharmacy has appointed Dr. Susan I. Jarvi as Director of the Pre-Pharmacy Program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Dr. Jarvi received her Ph.D. in Biology from Northern Illinois University in 1989, her M.S. degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1986 and a B.S. in Education from Fitchburg State College in 1983. She completed post-doctoral research studies at the Beckman Research Institute at the City of Hope National Medical Center from 1990-1993 and at the Molecular Genetics Laboratory of the Smithsonian Institution from 1993-1995. She continued as an Associate Research Scientist with USGS-BRD (Pacific Islands Ecosystems Research Center) and the Smithsonian Institution from 1995 until her hire by the Biology Department at the University of Hawaii at Hilo in 2000. In addition to her current position as Director of the Pre-Pharmacy Program, she serves as an Associate Professor and Chair of Biology, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of the Genetics Laboratory of Infectious Diseases and Avian Studies at UHH.

Anthony D. Wright, Ph.D.

Co-Director, Pacific Pre-Pharmacy Program

Dr. Anthony WrightAnthony Wright received his Ph.D. at the James Cook University, Queensland, Australia. Over the past 20 years, he has acquired extensive experience at the ETH-Zurich (Department of Pharmacy), Department of Pharmaceutical Biology at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Department of Pharmaceutical Biology at the University of Bonn, and, most recently, as Head of Natural Products at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. He has approximately 150 publications in high quality journals and has lectured extensively throughout the world. In sum, he is a world-renowned scientist with an impeccable track record and superb experience. As Associate Professor, he will interact with students in the classroom and laboratory. In addition, consistent with his track record, it is expected that he will develop a research program that is well-funded through extramural sources. As Chair of the new Department of Pharmaceutical Science, Dr. Wright will have significant administrative responsibility, such as be responsible for building the Department to a point wherein it is comparable to other renowned units in the UH system such as the Cancer Center. He will be responsible for recruiting first-class faculty, mentoring faculty, lecture assignments and monitoring, building the research agenda and infrastructure. Dr. Wright, like Dr. Jarvi, is committed to improving health care and health care education in the Pacific and believes the current program is just the start of some that will develop into something very positive for the whole region.
