Pre-Pharmacy Program

The Pre-pharmacy Program is a comprehensive preparatory program of study toward admittance into the College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Completion of the Pre-pharmacy course curriculum or equivalent is required for admission into the professional curriculum leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.). These requirements may be completed in two years of intensive study, after which successful applicants to the Pharm.D. program continue their studies for an additional four years, for a minimum of six years of college. The coursework is structurally aligned with the curriculum requirements toward a BA or BS degree in Biology or Chemistry at UHH.  Admission into and completion of the Pre-pharmacy program does not guarantee admission into the Doctor of Pharmacy Program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Admissions

While many students are admitted into the Pre-pharmacy Program as their first college experience, coursework of students transferring from other majors (e.g. Biology or Chemistry) at UHH or other colleges and Universities may apply toward their Pre-pharmacy Program of study. Students who are planning to complete the Pre-pharmacy program and pursue a Pharm.D. should consult the detailed information about admissions to the Pre-pharmacy Program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Curriculum Requirements

Students intending to pursue a Pharm.D. should consult the detailed description of the pre-pharmacy curriculum which shows the required courses. However, in order to complete the Pre-pharmacy and Pharm.D. programs in a total of six years, it is essential that students in Pre-Pharmacy work towards completing the General Education Electives that are required for completion of the Pharm.D. program. The PCAT is required for applying to the College of Pharmacy. Applicants must take the PCAT within five years of application to the program. The University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Pharmacy will not accept any other admission test in place of the PCAT.

Academic Advising

Academic advisors are assigned to individual students upon admission to any of the Pharmacy undergraduate or professional programs, including the pre-pharmacy program of study through the Office of Student Services.  Advisors help in planning schedules and they advise on electives and assist in determining the best schedule for a student to take. The advisor is the first person to go to when a student is having academic or personal problems, and should be considered a personal friend. Remember, your advisor is interested in you, and has the experience and ability to give you help when you need it.
