Amy Knehans, MLIS, AHIP

Pharmacy / Health Sciences Librarian

Ms. Knehans received her BS in Psychology from Sonoma State University and her MLIS from the University of North Texas. In 2004, Ms. Knehans participated in a Study Abroad field experience configuring and installing an integrated library system for a library in Phuket, Thailand as a part of a Student/Faculty Research Grant Program. She is active in the Medical Library Association (MLA) and is a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP). She has previously served several terms chairing the Pharmacy and Drug Information Section of MLA. One of her major PDI Section accomplishments was recruiting Dr. Lewis Mehl-Medrona, to deliver the endowed Embase lecture at MLA 2006 Annual meeting. He did a talk, “Exploring the boundaries between indigenous healing and contemporary biomedicine.” Ms. Knehans is a member of the Hawaii Pharmacists Association (HPhA). During the HPhA 2007 annual conference in Honolulu she presented a continuing pharmacy education topic on retrieving, analyzing, and interpreting quality drug information. She is a member of the Libraries/Educational Resources Section of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. In July 2007, section members prepared the document, “Cultural Competency: Selected Resources for Instruction.”

Ms. Knehans has been a faculty member of UHH since Fall 2005. As a librarian for the CoP she helps to ensure that access to library and educational resources are adequate to support the professional degree program and to provide for research and scholarly activities in accord with the CoP mission. Ms. Knehans participates in the instruction of pharmacy students to help incorporate and utilize library resources in the teaching and learning processes.

Her research interests include evidence-based approaches to reducing/eliminating health disparities and moving humanity toward equal health care for all. She believes that she can help people improve their understanding of their own health problems through access to-easy-to understand health-related materials and through health literacy community projects.
